Vastu Guidelines for Home Construction: Direction, Placement & Colors

Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian science of architecture and spatial arrangement that has guided home construction for thousands of years. Whether you fully believe in its principles or approach them as traditional wisdom, Vastu compliance can significantly influence the energy, comfort, and harmony of your home.

At Vaibhav Prasad Homes, we incorporate Vastu principles into our designs from the planning stage itself. Here is a comprehensive guide to the most important Vastu guidelines for every room and aspect of your home.

1. Entrance Direction

The entrance is the most critical element in Vastu — it determines the flow of energy into your home.

  • Recommended directions: East, West, North, South
  • Avoid: South West entrance — this is considered inauspicious as it allows negative energy to enter

An East-facing entrance is considered the most auspicious as it allows the first rays of the morning sun to enter, bringing positivity and vitality. North-facing entrances are associated with wealth and prosperity.

2. Kitchen Placement & Direction

The kitchen represents the fire element (Agni) and must be placed correctly to maintain balance.

  • Recommended: South East (the Agni corner) or West
  • Avoid: North East — this is the most inauspicious location for a kitchen
  • Avoid colors: Black marble and blue marble in the kitchen

When cooking, the person should ideally face East. If the kitchen is in the wrong direction, a remedy is to keep a green leaf below the stove or use yellow color in the kitchen area.

3. Master Bedroom

The master bedroom should be in the South West zone — this provides stability, control, and authority to the head of the family.

  • Recommended: South West
  • Avoid: North East, South of South West, West of North West
  • Sleeping direction: Head should face South or West, legs toward East

4. Kids Room

Children's rooms should be placed to promote growth, creativity, and focus.

  • Recommended: West or South West
  • Kids activities: Between North and East
  • Colors: Yellow, Grey, Light Blue, Light Black, Light Red, Light Pink
  • Creativity zone: East direction with Green color

5. Study Area

The study area should enhance concentration and knowledge retention.

  • Study table: West of South West
  • Colors: Yellow and Grey
  • North direction: Ideal for study — place Kuber photo or statue, use Blue, White, or Grey colors
  • Avoid in North: Red and Yellow colors

6. Pooja Room

The pooja room is the spiritual center of the home and must be treated with special care.

  • Recommended placement: North East or West
  • Praying direction: Face West while praying
  • Rule: Single photo per deity — avoid clustering multiple deities in one frame

7. Bathroom Direction

Bathrooms represent the water element and must be placed to avoid disrupting positive energy flows.

  • Avoid: North East — this is the spiritual corner and should remain pure
  • Direction indicator: Blue → North, Green → East, Red → South, White → West

8. Plants and Garden

Plants bring life energy (Prana) into the home. Their placement matters.

  • Recommended: East and North
  • Avoid: South and West — plants here may not thrive and can drain positive energy

9. Color Guidelines by Direction

Colors play a crucial role in Vastu. Each direction is associated with specific elements and colors:

  • South: Baby pink, Orange, Yellow (Avoid Black)
  • South East / South West: Avoid Blue
  • East: Green, Brown, Beige
  • West: White, Yellow
  • North: Blue, White, Grey (Avoid Red, Yellow)

For the couple's bedroom, use Light Green and avoid Red colors.

10. West Zone Guidelines

The West zone is associated with gains and profits when used correctly.

  • Recommended: Rooms and spiritual use
  • Avoid: Kitchen or Toilet in the West zone
  • Colors: White

11. Symbolic Placement

Certain symbols and religious icons have specific directional placements in Vastu:

  • Lion, Elephant, Horse: South direction
  • Lion specifically: South or East
  • Hanuman (Sanjeevani): North or North East
  • Devi Ma: South or East (Avoid blue and black colors)

12. Land Selection

Before construction even begins, Vastu applies to the land itself:

  • Facing sea: East, West, or North are auspicious (Avoid South)
  • Tall buildings nearby: Should be on West or South side (Avoid East/North)
  • Avoid: Corner plots (vata-shalas)

13. Bedrooms by Profession

Vastu also recommends bedroom directions based on profession for enhanced success:

  • Service employees: North
  • Sales professionals: West
  • Actors/Performers: South
  • Businessmen: West

14. Decision Making Tip

For important decisions or meetings, use the color Yellow in the space — it enhances clarity, confidence, and positive outcomes.

Why Vastu Matters in Modern Construction

Even if you don't subscribe to every Vastu principle, many guidelines align with practical architecture — proper ventilation, natural light, ergonomic layouts, and climate-responsive design. A Vastu-compliant home is not just spiritually harmonious; it is often a more comfortable and functional living space.

At Vaibhav Prasad Homes, we offer Vastu-compliant floor plans as a standard part of our design process. Whether you want full Vastu compliance or selective incorporation of key principles, we ensure your home is built the way you want it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can Vastu defects be corrected after construction?
A: Yes, many Vastu defects can be remedied without structural changes — using colors, mirrors, crystals, plants, and symbolic items. However, it is always better to incorporate Vastu from the design stage itself.

Q: Is Vastu different from Feng Shui?
A: Yes. Vastu Shastra is an Indian science based on directional energies and the five elements (Pancha Bhootas). Feng Shui is a Chinese practice based on chi (energy flow) and the balance of yin and yang. Both aim for harmony but use different frameworks.

Q: Does every room need to be Vastu-compliant?
A: Prioritize the entrance, kitchen, master bedroom, and pooja room. These have the strongest Vastu impact. Other rooms can have flexible compliance.
